Bombastic B Cup Game - February 17, 2012

Bombastic B won 4-1 against Coquitlam Wicca at Van Tech Turf.

Game Summary from Hugh:
Bombastic B Ladies finished out the group stage of their cup competition on Saturday with a convincing 4-1 victory over Coquitlam Wicca. Then win leaves us with 2 wins and 1 loss and a plus 4 goal difference in our 3 games almost assuring us placement in the consolation side of the cup playoff round.

Playing her last game for Bombastic and getting the start at striker, Marion Kehoe scored our first 2 goals - both on partial breakaways - as Wicca attempted to play the offside trap and we beat it repeatedly. Jenny Franks was rewarded for her excellent play recently with a goal on a rebound after Megan's corner kick was knocked away. We finished the half 3 - 0.

We started the second half very well and quickly made it 4-0 and it looked liked more goals were coming. The Wicca got a goal completely against the run of play and it seemed to inspire them. Both teams traded chances for the rest of the match.

Goals:
Marion - 2
Jenny - 1
Ana Maria - 1

Three stars of the game:
1. Marion Kehoe: left a big impression in her final game - we'll miss you Marion
2. Christina Mercier: defended well all game and really worked hard when Wicca pressed in the second half
3. Ashley Fowler: strong clears and free kicks and played smart at the back

Bombastic B Game - February 15, 2012

Bombastic B tied 0-0 against Van City FC C at Jericho Turf. The tie clinched first place in our section of Div 3 and promotion to Div 2 next season. We finished 11-0-3 on the season with 33 goals for and a paltry 4 goals against.

Game Summary from Hugh:
The game was tense affair as a very strong VanCity team needed to win to have a chance at the championship. Bombastic started strong, carried the play and created some chances in the first 15 minutes, after that VanCity seemed to find their game and the rest of the first half was fairly even. Apart from corner kicks and a couple long range efforts – neither team’s goal was threatened very much. The second half was more of the same with VanCity picking up their play a bit. Lindsay was outstanding in goal, coming well out to thwart a breakaway after a bad bounce near midfield put their forward in the clear, bravely smothering a loose ball at the feet of a Vancity striker, and securing a number of well-paced longer shots. Another bad bounce created a shot in close, but pressure from our D forced the shot over the bar. That’s as close as they came and because we knew that a draw was all we needed – the final whistle was great to hear.

Three stars of the game:

Really a great effort by all – everyone made a great positive contribution.

1. Lindsay Rolfe – see above
2. Marion Kehoe – ran hard the whole game, great defensive play and ball control
3. Jana Holbrook – the best of a great bunch of defenders

Bombastic B Cup Game - February 12, 2012

Bombastic B lost 1-3 against Coquitlam Thunder at Towncenter - Cunnings.

Game Summary from Hugh:
Well 32 games without a loss is something to be very proud of - an amazing accomplishment for an awesome group of ladies!

Our undefeated streak has come to an end. A young and physical Coquitlam Thunder team beat Bombastic B 3 -1 on Sunday night. After we started strongly and earned a couple of half-chances , the Thunder were awarded a very dubious penalty - that they converted well - on what looked like "ball to hand" from a cross that was headed nowhere. The call seemed completely against what we had been observing in the league this year. Bombastic dug in though, and after Tanya fought hard to win a loose ball at midfield, Jenny finished off Gagan's a beautiful back heal pass with a great low hard shot to the right corner - nice goal. We looked like we were going to be tied at half, but a missed opportunity to clear and the right bounce for the opposition resulted in the go ahead goal late in the half.

In the second half, we had some good periods of play, but ultimately we just couldn't generate enough quality scoring opportunities. As the half wore on we had to push a few players up and take more chances. Playing a little thinner at the back, the Thunder's 3rd goal came on a great shot from their strongest player from just outside the 18 yard box.

A break here and there and the result could've been different, but on the balance I think the better team - on the day - won. Everyone played hard for the whole game and I never saw anything but resolve to get the next goal. In terms of lesson's learned, this game shows how we need to be in Div 2 so we can fight through more games like this and gain the experience necessary to come out on top.

Goals:
Jenny - 1

Three stars of the game:
1. Jenny Franks: Was a real menace for the whole game had a number of crunching, clean, physical tackles (I bet the other team hated her) - played all 90 minutes oh, and scored the goal
2. Christina Mercier: Often, in our easier wins, we take our defense for granted and it is hard for them to shine just by being great defensively. Tina was outstanding Sunday night, quick, decisive, unbeatable and confident.
3. Tanya McLean: showed great leadership on the field playing both forward and on the backline

Bombastic B Cup Game - February 5, 2012

Bombastic B won 4-1 against NSGSC Saints at Windsor Secondary.

Game Summary from Hugh:
Bombastic B played a solid game and opened their cup competition with a convincing 4-1 victory over NSGSC Saints. The first half was especially good. After not being able to score on our first few chances, Tanya laid a nicely weighted through ball to Ana who touched it past the defender and scored with a good, low shot. A few minutes later Yasmina crossed deep to the far post and Tanya tapped it in and we were on our way. Megan got the 3rd goal by winning a loose ball at the top of the 18 and calmly finishing with their keeper out of position. A great first half and very satisfying to get some goals after our last 2 games.

The second half was a little less inspired. The Saints got a goal make it 3-1 and had a few decent shots after that. Lindsay was solid in net. I was thinking that another goal for us would be fair result (and goal difference counts in the cup) and just before the final whistle we had one of our nicest goals of the year. Ali intercepted a pass at the top of our 18 and dribbled forward about 20 yards before passing to Louise who had run wide and was at center on the right touch line facing in to receive the pass; Ana then ran towards the right corner to receive Louise's pass, picked up the ball and fed Marion running through the top of their box, took one touch and then hit it hard top corner. Wish I had it on video - so many things done right.

Goals:
Ana Maria - 1
Tanya - 1
Megan - 1
Marion - 1

Three stars of the game:

1. Ana Maria Rubio Izaza
2. Tanya McLean
3. Lindsay Rolfe

Honourable mentions to Ali who had her usual strong game and Louise who did really well in her first game for Bombastic.
