Bombastic Game - September 20, 2014

Bombastic FC lost 1-3 to West Coast FC Impact at Hillcrest (Midlothian) on September 20, 2014.

Bombastic FC began life in Div 1 with a 3-1 loss to the West Coast FC Impact. It was a hot afternoon on a somewhat bumpy grass pitch. The Impact had the edge in the first half but Bombastic defended very well. Unfortunately in this game, mistakes would cost us and the Impact ultimately were victorious because they capitalized on their chances - while we had our fair share of bad luck. Some miscommunication caused us to unnecessarily give up a corner and the Impact poked in a loose ball for a 1-0 lead. Bombastic came back a bit and we were unlucky not to score when their keeper barely stopped Monika's high shot and then smothered the rebound. The Impact got a fluky goal to go up 2-0 just before half when a misdirected attempted cross went over Lindsay's head and into the net.

Bombastic carried the play in the second half. Monika beat the keeper only to have her shot blocked on the line by a defender. The Impact got their 3rd goal against the run of play when a clearing attempt got past our back four and their speedy forward scored on a breakaway. We continued to fight. Steph had what looked like a goal cleared off the line (we thought it was in); Steph and then Sadaf hit the crossbar on two successive shots. Finally in about the 75th minute Sadaf put a nice shot in the right corner to get us our goal. We continued to press and played some great soccer but time ran out.

All in all it was a solid effort. In the second half we played some great soccer and really were unlucky not to have scored more than our one goal. The center mids - Maggie, Barb and Gagan were all outstanding.

Goal - Sadaf

Three Stars:
Gagan - I'll her the nod from center midfield - great determination - some epic battles with their best player
Sandra: calm and solid at the back - mistake free
Ashley: had a great second half, pushing up from her left back position and helping us keep the pressure on

Bombastic B Game - June 11, 2013

Bombastic B lost 2-3 to the Vancouver Spurs at Windermere HS.

Game Summary from Hugh:
Once again the B ladies played well and didn't get the result they deserved in a 3-2 defeat to the top-ranked Vancouver Spurs. Particularly in the first half Bombastic carried the play but just couldn't finish. I believe we had 6 corners in the first half. We had a number of solid shots from outside the 18 yard box either just miss or go straight to the keeper. Newcomers, Carol and Shelby created many problems for the Spurs backline with their speed. Their keeper made a great save stopping Shelby from close range. Like the week before, the opposition scored against the run of play - breaking quickly down the right wing with a good through ball to their winger who finished well. Thankfully, Shelby got us back even with about 2 minutes left in the half with a great effort to first win the ball and then fire a great shot from the top of the 18 over the keeper.

The second half was more even, but Bombastic continued to generate chances and corners. However, the Spurs took the lead on an own goal that was a complete fluke - a totally mishit cross hit Tanya's shoulder and bounced in the near corner while Gagan (playing goal) was moving to play the cross at the far corner - nothing anyone could do as the ball painfully rolled into the net. Bombastic came back strong. The Spurs keeper made the save of the game coming out and blocking Katrina's hard low shot with her left hand. As we pushed to get back to even, the Spurs made it 3-1 on a kinda sloppy goal after a cross to the far post. in about the 88th minute, Laurie made a great dribbling run through the midfield and Carol completed the play with a real striker's finish to make it 3-2. Unfortunately there was very little time left to complete the comeback.

Goals:
Shelby - 1
Carol - 1

Three stars of the game: Shelby, Carol, Jana

Bombastic B Game - June 4, 2013

Bombastic B won 2-1 against the Richmond Breakers at Brighouse School.

Game Summary from Hugh:

Bombastic B squeaked out a 2-1 victory over the Richmond Breakers - a score that very much flatters the opposition as Bombastic completely dominated this game.

Due to limited numbers and some travel delays, we started with nine players on the pitch. It didn't seem to matter though as we immediately generated a bunch of scoring chances. In the first half we had 4 shots off either the post or the crossbar (one that went off both) and about 4 or 5 other grade A chances that either just missed or were stopped by their quite capable keeper. Sure enough, Richmond then scored on their one good chance of the half.

We came out firing in the second half, and it was more of the same. It seemed like nothing was going to go in. Finally at about the 65th minute Marta left footed a beauty into the top corner after getting her first shot blocked. Then about 15 minutes later, Amy's nice through pass set up Katrina whose shot hit the far post; Sadaf did a great job of one-timing the rebound in the net. Richmond made a some efforts to tie the game but our defense was pretty solid and Yasmina was really good filling at keeper.

Goals:
Marta - 1
Sadaf - 1

Three stars of the game:

Tanya: for most of the game we essentially played with three at the back and Tanya was great at winning back control and feeding out forwards and mids so we could get back on attack.
Sadaf: particularly in the second half Sadaf made great runs with and without the ball - constantly moving - helping out on defense and scoring a goal.
Maggie: a big part of a lot of our offense from her center-mid position

Bombastic B Game - May 28, 2013

Bombastic B lost 1-2 to the Meraloma Menace at Windermere HS.

Game Summary from Hugh:
The Bombastic B ladies lost 2-1 to Meraloma Menace. We had a slow start and we almost got away with it, but Meralomas scored at about 10 minutes on an obviously offside play. From about the mid-point of the first half we began to take over the game although when halftime arrived we hadn't created that many scoring chances.

That all changed in the second half when we had numerous chances to score. Katrina pounced on a great ball into the box from Ashley and hit great low shot that was so hard their keeper couldn't react; unfortunately, it hit her square in the knee and bounced away from trouble. At about the 75th minute - and totally against the run of play - a Meraloma hit a speculative lob from well out that went over Lindsay's head. We are now down 2-0 on an offside goal and fluke goal. We were not deterred though and Gagan finally got us goal by beautifully one timing Katrina's corner kick low and past their keeper. With 4 minutes left we poured everyone forward and created a few more chances, including Katrina hitting the upright so hard the rebound bounced clear out of the 18 yard box. A frustrating result, but some really encouraging  play and teamwork.

Goals:
Gagan - 1

Three stars of the game:
Katrina (was some part of most of our best chances and really unlucky not to score),
Gagan (scores, again),
Laurie (was all over the pitch - in a good way - in the second half - doing everything she could to get us a result)

Bombastic B Game - May 21, 2013

Bombastic B tied 1-1 with the RGSA Rangers at Burnett Secondary School #1.

Game Summary from Hugh:

Bombastic tied the RGSC Rangers 1-1. After a slow start, Bombastic began to play much better. We had a number of excellent chances foiled by a number of - sometimes - questionable offside calls. Richmond took the lead at about 20 minutes when our defense failed to close quickly enough and they scored on a well taken long shot that Lindsay had no chance on. The rest of the half was back and forth. They had a couple of good low shots that Lindsay did well to save.

The second half was much better. Our passing up the field was fantastic. There was great work between Sadaf and Katrina - one play resulting in Sadaf being one-on-one with their keeper but she unfortunately couldn't get a good enough shot away. Gagan dazzled with a dribbling sequence straight up the spine of the pitch into their 18 yard box but also couldn't finish. Gagan finally got us a goal off of a scramble after a Katrina free kick about half-way through the half. The last quarter of the game was spent mostly in their end with a slew of really good chances. Katrina had some gorgeous corners, many of which we failed get on the end of. Yas had a solid header off one of them that their keeper managed to get a finger on and knock over the bar. Maggie took a number of shots - one hit the crossbar so hard it reverberated!

Overall, a very solid effort. One that we were unlucky not to get the full three points.

Goals:
Gagan - 1

Three stars of the game: Gagan, Maggie, and Laurie

Bombastic B Game - May 14, 2013

Bombastic B lost 0-4 to Westside Wild at Windermere HS.

Game Summary from Hugh:

Bombastic B lost 4-0 to Westside Wild. Despite the score, this game was very even in the first half. Bombastic had some excellent chances. Ashley put a great ball across the goal mouth that Katrina just missed. Katrina shot wide on a well earned partial breakaway and Ashley hit a strong left footed shot that was saved by their keeper. Lindsay had to make a couple saves but was really was not overly busy until the 44th minute when Westside's striker hit a great shot from about 25 yards over her (no chance) for a 1-0 halftime lead.

Early in the second half, Lindsay made a great save to prevent an own goal, only to see the rebound put in. From that point on, the long grass of the pitch and our lack of substitutions caught up to us and although we moved the ball into the Westside on a number of occasions, we couldn't really create any great chances. Westside added two more - well executed - goals to close out the match.  There were some good Bombastic efforts but overall it was not one of our finer days.

Three stars of the game: Tanya, Lindsay, and Maggie

Bombastic B Game - May 7, 2013

Bombastic B lost 2-3 to the Vancouver Spurs at Van Tech turf.

Game Summary from Hugh:
Bombastic B lost 2-3 to Vancouver Spurs in a well played fast paced game. After some early pressure by the opposition, Gagan was fouled a few yards outside their 18 yard box and Katrina scored on a fantastic free kick. The game was end to end with chances for both teams. Lindsay made some good saves and combined with various defenders on some nail-biting goal mouth scrambles. The Spurs came back an led 2-1 at the half on a couple of, to be honest, preventable goals where we made mistakes in dangerous areas. That said though, they had us under a lot of pressure at times and the defense played very well.

The Spurs went up 3-1 about half way though the second half on a long lobbing shot that Lindsay had no chance on. Bombastic came back hard and got to within one goal on a fantastic individual effort by Katrina - taking a pass with her back to net, turning and beating a defender and then the keeper with a perfect low shot. We had a few more chances, including a ball off the inside of the goal post that stayed out, but couldn't tie it up.

Goals:
Katrina - 2

Bombastic B Game - April 30, 2013

Bombastic B won 3-1 against Richmond Breakers at Windermere HS.

Game Summary from Hugh:
A solid start to the spring season as Bombastic B won 3-1 over Richmond Breakers. 0-0 at the half but it seemed that Bombastic were beginning to take over the game. Our newest addition, Sadaf, was involved in all three goals: hitting a great goal mouth cross that Amy smartly (lol) headed in; making a great pass to Tanya to start a play that she eventually finished with an unstoppable shot from outside the box; and taking the initial shot on the 3rd goal poked in nicely by Gagan.

Goals:
Amy - 1
Sadaf - 1
Gagan - 1

Three stars of the game: Courtney, Maggie, and Sadaf
