Game Summary - February 24, 2009

Bombastic B played possibly their best game ever on Tuesday night as they beat a very strong Valley United FC B 4 - 2. This was a highly entertaining game. Valley scored first on a cross from the left side that was poked in by one of their forwards. Bombastic came right back as Mel Glover dribbled brilliantly out of our end all the way down the field, leaving a nice ball for Kim Willey to finish. It was 1 - 1 at the half. The second half was end to end. Mel put us up 2-1 with a nice left footer to the far corner, and then Valley came right back to tie it up. With both team generating chances, Cathy Doucet made a nice run with the ball through the middle and made a great pass against the grain to Kim who finished really well. With Valley pressing hard for a tying goal, Cathy knocked in a 4th from outside the 18. Kim, Mel, and Cathy had awesome games, but so did our whole back line especially Kate Daley who filled in a sweeper. Lindsay Rolfe was really solid in goal too. Player of the game: Cathy Doucet.

Bombastic A returned to form to beat a very strong Semiahmoo Spirit 1-0, playing with only 10 players for the 60 minutes of the game after Andrea Bava went down with an ankle injury. We defended solidly against a very skilled opposition, with a little help from a goal post. The goal came 20 minutes into the second half off a corner taken by Claire Hatcher caused a scramble in front of the net and Hayley Watson got a foot on the ball to put it in the back of the net. The Spirit really turned up the pressure after our goal, but we remained composed defensively and held them at bay. Again, a solid game from everyone on the field, but standouts were Tricia "Guys, why is she always there?" McNorton and Kira Sanger playing with the flu and still managing to cause some problems for the opposition. Player of the game: Kim Caruthers who played a smart game, chased down every ball, and began a lot of offensive plays from left back.
Bombastic B won their 3rd game in row beating West Side 2-1 and putting us in good shape to avoid relegation. Lindsay Rolfe made a great save against the run of play early to keep the score 0-0. Mary Ellen (Mel) Glover scored a nice goal and the first half ended 1 - 0 Bombastic. Westside came out strong in the second half, but Kim Willey scored on a breakaway to put us up by 2. Westside got a late goal to make it interesting. Cathy Doucet had a strong gamer at midfield, and Lisa Glowacki played great at stopper. Player of the game: Ashley Drummond who was solid at left back: being vocal, playing smart, and letting nothing get down that side of the field.

Bombastic B won it's second game in a row, beating Dunbar Thunder 1 - 0 in their first cup game. It was an exciting match, with a lot of play at both ends. The first half ended scoreless. We got our goal early in the second half when Dumbar clearance from in front of their goal was hammered from at least 20 yards out by Theresa Webber into the top corner - definitely a candidate for goal of the year (left footed too). After that, Dunbar pressed but failed to score. Thanks and kudos to Ashley Drummond and Kate Daley who shared the goaltending duties and both played great. Player of the game: Theresa Webber - and an honourable mention to Thao Ngo who played one her best games ever.
Bombastic A had a tough cup game against a young, fit and fairly strong VGSC Sabres team and lost 3 - 0. The first half ended 0 - 0, thanks to some strong keeping from Chloe Handley and a goal post or two. We had a few chances - Kira Sanger and Hayley Watson worked hard up front. The Sabres checked very hard and their speed didn't allow us much time on the ball. This eventually caused some turnovers and all their goals game in the second half. The effort was there for Bombastic, but everyone agreed it was not our best outing. Player of the game: Christina Lazeski - this team worked us hard and no one worked harder than Christina in the center midfield.

Game Summary - February 6, 2009

Bombastic A 1 - Langley United 0
The Bombastic A team continued their impressive 2009 with a convincing 1-0 cup win over a solid Langley team. After a shaky first 5 minutes, we carried the play and often dominated for the rest of the game. We didn't score in the first half but came close many times - Ally Thompson had a shot off the goalpost, we had a shot headed for the back of the net intentionally knocked down by a handball (no penalty or card?) and their keeper made a number of good saves. The second half was even more impressive. Kira Sanger put a sweet finish on great through ball from Christina Lazeski to give us the lead. After that we had a number of great chances and limited them to one shot on net and one over the bar. Again a great team game, we had no subs and everyone played well. We had great defense from our offense as the midfield and forwards checked their backline and caused a ton of turnovers. Ally and Christina were really solid in central midfield. Player of the game; Kira Sanger.
