Bombastic B Cup Game - February 9, 2013

Bombastic B tied 1-1 with NSGSC Outlaws at Van Tech turf in their third Cup game.

Game Summary from Hugh:

Bombastic B played to a 1 - 1 draw with the NSGSC Outlaws. It was a tough physical game and the Outlaws are a good team. Still, on the balance of play Bombastic maybe deserved a better result.

The first half was fairly even. The Outlaws got their goal when we were slow to react to a loose ball in a dangerous area, and the Outlaw player took advantage picking up the ball about 25 yards out, taking a couple of touches towards our goal and firing an excellent low shot to the corner. We had some half chances throughout the half including a handful of corners but could not make a breakthrough.

We came out strong in the second half and were determined to get the tying goal. We certainly dominated, earning more corners and I don't think even allowing a shot on our goal. The Outlaws defended very well though. Katrina was a force on offence working well with Laurie, Marta and Sarah to attack down the right side of the pitch. On left side, Maggie was really effective, beating defenders and getting some great crosses in to danger areas. We missed a few great chances but finally Marta knocked in one of Maggie's crosses from about 5 yards out.

Goals:
Marta - 1

Three stars of the game:

1. Maggie - second great game in a row - add so much to our offence and works very hard all game
2. Katrina - as she is often, the most dangerous player on the field and the one that the opposition defence keys on stopping - if she's not scoring she's earning (and taking) corners and creating a lot of space for her team-mates.
3. Kara - had a really solid game, great positionally and made some nice passes

Bombastic B Cup Game - February 2, 2013

Bombastic B won 3-1 against the Langley Lush Puppies at Van Tech turf in their second Cup game.

Game Summary from Hugh:
Bombastic B won our second straight cup match 3-1 over the Langley Lush Puppies. It was an impressive effort, and we clearly were the better team, but the result was not secured until late in the second half. We started a bit slowly but soon began to generate chances. Laurie knocked in some nice corner kicks that were often only knocked down by their keeper resulting in a bunch of goalmouth scrambles that we could not manage to put in. Gagan hit a great left footer wide of left post. Marta beat a defender and the keeper only to frustratingly put her shot off the post. At about 30 minutes Maggie put in a good low cross that resulted in another scramble - this time Marta was able to find it an put it in. Langley had few chances until the referee gifted them a free kick from about 25 yards out; the Langley player made a great shot over our wall. 1-1 at half.

Play was fairly even at the end of the first half and the start of the second, but we could see they were getting tired and we slowly began to take over to the point where the ball was rarely in our half. We had a number of chances but none of them were really 'grade a'. It was looking like one of those games where we might not find a way to break through. It didn't help that the referee was making some strange calls. Finally, with about 15 minutes left, Marta dropped back to just inside their half and played a great pass to Maggie who made a fantastic run catching Langley's backline flat-footed. Maggie made no mistake on the breakaway. A few minutes later, Sarah was the first to get to a bobbled ball from their goalkeeper after Laurie hit a solid free kick.

Goals:
Marta - 1
Maggie - 1
Sarah - 1

Three stars of the game:
1. Marta - a classic Marta effort; you could see the determination in her eyes "there's no way we are not winning this game" - scored and set up the winner
2. Maggie - had a number of great crosses in the first half and then scored a beauty of a winning goal
3. Laurie - as usual the whole backline played great - all were stars in my book - but Laurie gets the nod due all of her great free kicks and corners

Bombastic B Cup Game - January 27, 2013

Bombastic B won 1-0 over Poco Steel at Cedar Drive Park for their first Cup game.

Game Summary from Hugh:

The Bombastic B Ladies kicked off their cup run with a 1-0 victory over the PoCo Steel. It was a rainy, wet, cold afternoon and the match was played on a somewhat soggy, slick grass pitch. The first half ebbed and flowed with lots of play at both ends and both teams counter attacking quite well. Neither team had much success in the final third however. Bombastic had a slight edge in play in the first half,  but lost out often to PoCo’s center defender who was tall, physical, and fast. Our best chances came on fast breaks and a couple of good crosses that were headed away. When PoCo counter attacked – often with a potentially dangerous 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 -  our defenders were outstanding; timing their tackles to perfection.  I don’t recall either team having a great scoring chance in the first 45 minutes.

We began to wear them down a bit in the second half and started to earn more chances. Maggie did some great work down the left wing resulting in a good shot on net and a great cross into the box that bounced off Gagan right to their keeper. It looked like neither team would score and it was getting to that nervous point of the game where a bad bounce one way or another could decide it. At about the 70th minute Gagan collected a loose ball at the top of the 18 yard box and hit a great left footed shot low to the corner past their keeper. 1-0 Bombastic. We defended well for the last 20 minutes to preserve the win.

Goals:
Gagan - 1

Three stars of the game:
1. Christina – had an outstanding game getting to and clearing loose balls with authority and making a number of impeccably timed tackles
2. Laurie – created a lot of our offensive pressure by moving up the field well from her right back position - a lot of our team 'shape' comes from Laurie's positioning
3. Gagan – scored the winner -  with her left foot for the second week in a row.

Bombastic B Game - January 20, 2013

Bombastic B won 2-1 against Richmond FC Olympics at Minoru Turf #2.

Game Summary from Hugh:
Bombastic B finished up their very successful season with a 2-1 victory over Richmond FC Olympics. It was our 6th win in a row and our 10th game without a loss - after beginning the season with 3 losses and a tie.

Sunday's game was particularly impressive as we had only 12 players, and due to injury and illness we had to play parts of the game with only 10 on the pitch. Richmond had plenty of subs and were well organized and pressed us from the opening whistle. Even though they had more of the possession our defense was solid and they really didn't generate many clear scoring chances. Wes scored a great goal about 20 minutes in. Lindsay made a save on a long shot from her left and immediately threw the ball to Laurie who had had positioned herself wide on the right. This quick movement to the weakside opened up a ton of space. Laurie fed Maggie who put a great through ball into the Richmond half. Katrina made a great run taking the defender with her and allowing Gagan to pick up the ball and take a couple of touches before putting a great low shot into the right corner. 1-0 Bombastic at the half.

The second half was more of the same - Richmond having more possession but having trouble figuring out how to get through our defense. We had had the occasional counter-attack and Ashley moved up well from left midfield to get into the goal area and bundle in a lose ball that had taken a few odd bounces. 2-0 Bombastic. Richmond - to their credit - continued to press and finally were rewarded with about 8 minutes left when a hard through ball ricocheted to provide a breakaway for their forward who finished nicely.  That was it though, as we hung on for the win.

Goals:
Gagan - 1
Ashley - 1

Three stars of the game:
1. Jana - the whole defense was excellent, but Jana in particular had a game where nothing was going to get by her -  a real captain's effort.
2. Maggie - made great passes and was very calm on the ball - played a big part in the opening goal
3. Ashley - solid game, especially in the second half when she and everyone else was tired - scored the winner!
